Arkivio Makes Available Lifecycle Management Report
Arkivio Forum Brings Together Leading Companies to Address Top Challenges in Data and Information Lifecycle Management

Mountain View, CA. :: October 8, 2003

Arkivio Inc., a leading provider of Lifecycle Management solutions for electronic data and information today announced the company recently hosted the industry’s first Lifecycle Management forum. The goal of the forum was to bring together leading companies from a variety of industries to address the new challenges created by current economic conditions and government regulations in order to guide the development of customer-centric solutions for managing data and information over its lifecycle.

Due to the success of the forum, Arkivio is consolidating its findings into a comprehensive report and making it available on its website.

Noted the president and CEO of Arkivio, Giovanni Paliska, "The forum was created as a neutral platform to bring together members of the end user, vendor and solution provider communities to address how Lifecycle Management techniques and technologies can help address current and future issues related to Storage Consolidation, Disaster Recovery, Data Retention, and Capacity Management. Our Lifecycle Management report, which we will make available to the industry, is a strong enabling tool toward this goal."

Over twenty ARKIVIO customers, strategic partners and noted industry analyst Dr. Robert Passmore, research vice president of Gartner Research attended. Some of the participants included Allegra Systems, RCS, Snap Appliance, and XOMA, along with notable storage companies such as Arkivio, Computer Associates, Hitachi Data Systems, Nexsan Technologies, Sony Corporation, and solution providers SANZ Inc. and SSi. Moderated by Dr. Passmore, the forum covered a broad set of topics including the challenges, best practices and future direction of Data and Information Lifecycle Management.

According to Dr. Passmore, "Lifecycle Management of data and information is both a process and solution that must provide methods for identifying and classifying data and storage resources and attaching a value to each set." He further stated that Lifecycle Management encompasses the functionality of storage resource management (SRM), automated data migration or hierarchical storage management (HSM), and policy-based automation for data management actions, such as data movement, replication, purging, archiving, data retention and backup."

According to Christine Wallis, senior vice president, global strategy and planning, Hitachi Data Systems, "It is common for companies to migrate data from one storage device to another using scripts and other manual techniques. Traditional technologies focus on moving old data to tape and were not designed for all the different types of data kept online by enterprises in today’s world of the Internet, customer service, and government regulation. Because these approaches are cumbersome and error prone, there is definitely a need for policy-based solutions that automate data migration from one class of storage to another as the data’s value to the company changes over time."

Paliska further added, "With the introduction of ARKIVIO® auto-stor in September of 02’, Arkivio has led the resurgence of Lifecycle Management and its renewed interest within the storage industry by delivering solutions to solve critical customer problems. We are well positioned to gain additional momentum in the rest of 2003 and beyond as we advance our leadership position with direct input from top companies in the industry."

As Dr. Passmore concluded, the rewards of implementing Lifecycle Management solutions far outweigh the challenges. IT departments are able to achieve the proper balance of cost, performance, data accessibility, availability, and protection within their storage infrastructure by appropriately managing their data from the moment it is created to the time at which it is no longer needed. They are able to reduce acquisition and management cost of storage over time, better meet federal guidelines for data retention, shorten backup windows and recovery times, and consolidate and optimize utilization of resources.
